I saw my therapist yesterday for the first time in about three months. She had moved offices again and it seemed like forever since I had seen her. We chatted to catch up. We talked about how the past year is the first time I’ve ever been able to work full-time without it being disastrous for my health–or for my employer, and my healthy intimate relationship — the first non abusive one Iv’e had in a very long time. “You’ve turned out really well,” she said.
At first I was offended, but then I laughed. She said “You know what I mean, you were someone with bipolar who really needed help and I cannot believe how many doctors wouldn’t see you.”
“They said I was too hard-core, three suicide attempts was too much for them,” I told her.
“Well, you’ve done the work and your really in a good place now.”
“I am,” I replied.
My brother had the same thing, passed from doctor to doctor for years and now he’s doing amazing. Patience and compassion moves people along.
